Mr. Hamil

Mr. Hamil, a retired itinerant carpet merchant, spends all of his time at Mr. Driss’ café reading the Koran and Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (French writer, 1802-1885). Mr. Hamil is Momo’s friend, and he is an elderly Muslim who teaches the child everything he knows (“I do not know what I would have become without Mr. Hamil who taught me everything I know”).

Mr. Hamil and Momo have a relationship based on discussion. They mainly address the concept of human wisdom. The old man, just like Dr. Katz, is touched by Momo’s sensitivity. With him, the boy escapes by thinking. Mr. Hamil tells Momo that his destiny lies in poetry or writing. Clearly, the adults inform the narrator of his capacity to use his sensitivity as an engine to create a positive life for himself.
